Maruti Suzuki Escudo: A New Mid-Size SUV Set to Shake Up the Segment

Maruti Suzuki is preparing to launch an all-new mid-size SUV, likely to be named the Escudo, during the 2024 festive season. Codenamed Y17, this 5-seater will slot between the Brezza and Grand Vitara, directly challenging popular rivals like the Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos.

Bigger Dimensions, More Practicality

Built on the Global-C platform, the Escudo will be longer than 4,345 mm, offering a more spacious cabin and increased boot space compared to the Grand Vitara. While exact figures remain under wraps, expect it to surpass the Grand Vitara’s 373-litre boot, potentially edging closer to the Creta’s 433-litre capacity—making it a strong family-friendly option.

Design & Styling

The Escudo is expected to borrow design cues from the Grand Vitara, retaining Maruti’s signature styling while adding a fresh, modern appeal. Spy shots suggest a bold front grille, sleek LED lighting, and a muscular stance to stand out in the crowded SUV segment.

Powertrain Options: Petrol, CNG & Hybrid

The Escudo will likely carry forward the Grand Vitara’s engine lineup, including:

  • 1.5L NA Petrol (104 BHP) – Base variant
  • CNG Option (88 BHP) – For cost-conscious buyers
  • Strong Hybrid (116 BHP, under consideration) – For better fuel efficiency

Strategic Positioning: Arena vs. Nexa

Unlike the Grand Vitara (sold via Nexa), the Escudo will be retailed through Maruti’s Arena dealerships, filling a crucial gap since the Brezza is currently the only SUV in Arena’s lineup. This move allows Maruti to tap into a wider customer base and boost sales volumes.

Not a 7-Seater Grand Vitara

Earlier rumors suggested a 7-seater Grand Vitara, but Maruti has shifted focus to the Escudo instead, prioritizing a premium 5-seater for the mid-size segment.

Launch Timeline & Market Impact

The Escudo’s debut will precede Maruti’s first electric SUV, the e-Vitra (expected September 2025), reinforcing the brand’s dual strategy—strengthening ICE offerings while transitioning to EVs.

Why the Escudo Matters?

Competes directly with Creta & Seltos
Bigger boot, family-friendly practicality
CNG & hybrid options for varied buyers
Expands Arena’s SUV portfolio

With aggressive pricing (expected ₹10-16 lakh range), the Escudo could become a game-changer in India’s SUV market.
