Veteran actor Daya Shankar Pandey, known for his memorable roles in Lagaan, Swades, Raajneeti, and more, recently shared an interesting anecdote about working with Aamir Khan. The two have collaborated in films like Lagaan and Ghulam, but their journey wasn’t always smooth.
The Incident That Made Pandey See Aamir as a “Villain”
During a candid chat with Friday Talkies, Pandey revealed that Aamir Khan once removed him from the 1995 film Akele Hum Akele Tum, directed by Mansoor Khan. At the time, Pandey was struggling financially and had taken up a junior artist’s role in the movie, earning ₹2000 per day for 12 days of work.
Pandey admitted that he avoided Aamir on set, fearing recognition. However, Aamir eventually spotted him and questioned his presence. When Pandey explained he was working as a junior artist, Aamir immediately intervened, telling the director and assistant director, “Don’t waste him—he’s a very good actor.”
While Aamir’s intention was to respect Pandey’s talent, the actor didn’t appreciate the gesture at the time.
“Andar se mujhe Aamir Khan villain lag raha tha (I saw Aamir Khan as a villain then). Maine kaha okay. Mujhe pack up kar diya (I said okay, and they let me go),” Pandey recalled.
How Aamir Khan Made It Up to Him
Though Pandey lost the opportunity in Akele Hum Akele Tum, Aamir later compensated by casting him in Lagaan and recommending him for a key role in Ghulam. This gesture helped rebuild their professional relationship.
